   About  Bio Itzá?
San José is a small indigenous community on the banks of Lago Petén Itzá. The town has about 1,500 inhabitants and is known for its preservation of its heritage and culture.

Many students enjoy relaxing on one of the beaches, playing soccer or basketball in the park, watching the local fishermen pass by, or reading and studying by the lakeside. The town has many modern facilities you would expect: a health center, post office, and public phones on every block. There are a few places to gather at night, and more to come... Multiple hotels and at least one cafe are currently under construction.

Time spent in San José will include intensive Spanish language instruction and participation in projects of the Itzá people. The school has developed a curriculum that combines classroom studies with field trips and volunteer work opportunities.
While students focus on Spanish language training, they are also introduced to the traditional heritage of the local people by visiting the Bio-Itzá Reserve, a conservation area of 36 sq. km.

     Classes:
Classes are offered in the morning or afternoon, and are typically 4 hours per day Monday-Friday. If you want more time to explore the area, you can attend fewer hours per day... or if you're in a rush to learn, we'll be glad to offer you more.

Learning with us, you'll have one-on-one instruction, personalized to your needs and requests. The lessons concentrate on Spanish grammar, in an immersion context. You'll be surprised how fast you'll learn in full immersion.

Our students are all different types of people, different nationalities and different ages. We'll be glad to accomodate families and groups.

     Homestay:
Many students find their homestay to be the most rewarding part of their studies. Staying with a family can give insight into a different culture, and a different way of life. This is also true for the members of your host family... especially the kids... who often enjoy chatting at night with the students or helping with homework.

Homestays include three meals per day, seven days per week. We gladly accomodate vegetarians; please let us know when you register.

All homes have showers and purified drinking water available to you. We usually place one student per host-family, but we gladly accomodate couples and families, together, if you let us know in advance.

     Activities and Volunteering:
While studying at the Bio-Itzá school, you will be provided with an opportunity to do volunteer work. This volunteer work will not only help the development of the town and the conservation of the surrounding environment, but will also enhance your learning experience at the school.

Language classes are usually held in the morning so students can enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the outdoors conversing and spending time with the locals. Depending on the weather, our students can take part in a variety of activities from cooking lessons to visiting the Mayan Languages Academy where the elderly work to keep the Maya heritage alive by teaching younger children the Itzá language.
